Take a walk along the beach in the morning on Samui you'll see fighting buffalos being exercised by their trainers. These animals may be of great value and are well cared for by their owners.
Only bulls take part in the fights and serious injury to any animal is unusual. Before each bout, the bulls are displayed wearing multi-coloured ribbons and golden leaves on their horns. They are then blessed with water and the fight is ready to begin.
Great cheers rise from the crowds of excited spectators as the bulls lock horns and begin their battle of strength and willpower .The fight is over when one of the bulls turns and runs from the other. Fights may last only a few seconds or may continue for extended periods until one buffalo retreats.
The season starts on new years day in January and continues at Songkran in mid-April. Makeshift stadiums are set up at several different locations throughout the island and events are advertised in advance. A small entry fee is charged for men with free admission for women.
