The pig-tailed macaque monkey has been working for generations on Koh Samui. These intelligent and dexterous primates climb trees to release the ripe coconuts.
Twisting the large nuts with their hands until they drop to the ground, they are then gathered by their human employers to be processed and sold at market.
Before tourists came to Samui farming coconuts was the main business of the island and these working monkeys were, and still are, prized possessions of their owners.
Pig-tailed macaques have olive brown fur with lighter coloured under-parts. They have a short slightly curled tail, slender with light fur or completely naked. Adult males are considerably larger than females and have a life-span of around 25 years.
Their preferred habitat is lowland coastal swamp and mountain forest up to 1,700 meters. They are found throughout the Malay Peninsula, Myanmar and Sumatra.
