The temple of Wat Phra Yai is located on a small islet off the north coast of Koh Samui. Connected to mainland Samui by a causeway, the temple is the site of the famous Big Buddha. Built back in 1972 by the Local Society of Samui, the 12 meter golden statue sits high on a raised platform and is visible from miles around.
One of the most visited places on the island, please remember that this is a religious and meditation center and respect should be shown. Remove your shoes before climbing the staircase to the base of the statue, here you'll find huge prayer bells around the perimeter of the platform and fantastic views of the surrounding area.
Servicing the tourists and locals who come here are a number of gift shops, eateries and car parking facilities.
