Phuket
Found off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea, Phuket is the largest of Thailand's islands. A road bridge connects it to the mainland at its most northern point. In the past, this area relied on tin mining and rubber plantations as an income source, today tourism has replaced these traditional industries.
Along with 39 smaller islands, Phuket occupies an area of approximately570sq.kms. It's mountainous western side has a number of good beaches on the coast, inland you'll find palm oil and rubber farms. There is little evidence remaining of the damage caused by the tsunami of 2004. Following an extensive clean up program the island has returned to normal business. Patong beach is the major tourist center.
With many bars, clubs, restaurants and gift shops, this area provides numerous sporting and leisure activities to occupy visitors.
A variety of festivals and events take place throughout the year. The Laguna Phuket Triathlon takes place in December attracting international athletes from around the world. Phuket International Airport is in the north of the island and handles both domestic and long haul air traffic.
