Mu Ko Ang Thong – Ang Thong group of islands

An archipelago consisting of 42 individual islands lying north-west of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand is an area of superb natural beauty. With huge limestone rock formations (karsts) rising up from the sea, unique caves, a variety of forest types, many species of corals and exotic wild life, the park is 102 sq km in size.

Best visited between the months of February and April, the park closes in November and December due to unfavorable weather conditions. A main attraction of the park is the “Emerald Lake” found on Mae Ko Island. This inland sea surrounded by cliffs and limestone forest has an incredible colour and is linked to the outer sea by a subterranean cavern. This site is thought to be a source of inspiration for Alex Garland’s 1996 novel The Beach A trek from the beach to the lakeside takes around 30 to 40 minutes and offers fabulous views of the entire park.

The Park Ranger Station is on Wua Talap Island. The beach here is good for swimming. About 1000 meters from the station is Bua Bok Cave, it has striking stalagmite and stalactite formations within. The mountain top view point is well worth the 500 meter climb to enjoy the spectacular scenery. A few bungalows and a camp site are available for overnight accommodation.

#Return to Samui and on to the elephant camp.
#Elephant trek through the jungle and feed the elephants.
